"Thro' evening shades I haste away / to close the labours of my day."

Magic of the Celtic Otherworld #1

Mistletoe was unknown to the Irish druids – it was not introduced to Ireland until the nineteenth century – and we know that the Irish druids did not pay as much reverence to the oak as Pliny suggests the Gaulish druids did. It also seems highly unlikely that any druid would attempt to cut the tough stalks of the mistletoe with a sickle made of gold, a metal which does not take an edge. No gold sickles have ever been found in Britain, Ireland or on the Continent.
